18 Years Later, Garry's Mod Passes Huge Sales Milestone

Summary

Garry's Mod reports 25.5M copies sold on its 18th anniversary. The game's success has been fueled by a robust community and popular game modes.

Facepunch Studios has confirmed that Garry's Mod has sold over 25.5 million copies, announcing the sales milestone on the game's 18th anniversary. Garry's Mod has been available on Steam since 2006 and has amassed a large player base over the years.

Despite its age, Garry's Mod retains a dedicated audience on Steam. The level of versatility in the game has led it to be considered among the best sandbox games ever, with game modes such as Prop Hunt and roleplay servers keeping players coming back for years on end. It's a simple formula, but without its impressive community, it wouldn't have had anywhere near the level of success it has attained. Waves of popularity on YouTube and Twitch among big creators have also played an important role in keeping Garry's Mod relevant for 18 years.

Valve games have played home to several iconic protagonists, but some are arguably better and more iconic than others.

In a post celebrating the game's 18th anniversary, it was confirmed that Garry's Mod has sold over 25.5 million copies, making it the best-selling PC exclusive game of all time. For what started out as one of the best mods around, to then be published by Valve and hit such a milestone years later, it's a remarkable feat. The post also highlighted a few interesting statistics about the game, including its one Steam Award win, as well as over 1.1 million reviews, which currently sit at "Overwhelmingly Positive" on Steam.

Garry's Mod Has Sold Over 25.5 Million Copies

The game's original creator, Garry Newman, also chimed in on the anniversary. He told the story of how he initially refused Valve's offer of selling Garry's Mod on Steam, as he believed that no one would pay for it. Over 25 million copies and one unfortunate Nintendo-related takedown request later, he says that he's "glad to have been wrong on this one."

Although Garry's Mod remains very popular on PC, Facepunch Studios is hard at work on its successor on the Source 2 engine. The long-awaited s&box was announced a few years back, and updates have been few and far between since. Garry's Mod, for all its fun, is certainly showing its age nowadays given the age of the Source engine. Any successor that offers the same flexibility could be a massive hit. Facepunch Studios is also occupied with the development of Rust, which somewhat slows proceedings on s&box. No release date is currently announced for s&box at this point, but for now, Garry's Mod is available at 40% off on Steam for the duration of the Steam Autumn Sale.

Garry's Mod

Garry's Mod is a physics sandbox. There aren't any predefined aims or goals. We give you the tools and leave you to play.

You spawn objects and weld them together to create your own contraptions - whether that's a car, a rocket, a catapult or something that doesn't have a name yet - that's up to you. You can do it offline, or join the thousands of players who play online each day.

If you're not too great at construction - don't worry! You can place a variety of characters in silly positions. But if you want to do more, we have the means.

The Garry's Mod community is a tremendous source of content and has added hundreds of unique modes to the game. In Trouble In Terrorist Town, you can be a detective solving an online murder as criminals attempt to cover up their homicides. Be a ball, a plant, a chair, or anything else in Prop Hunt's elaborate, shape-shifting game of Hide & Seek. Elevator: Source is gaming's first elevator thrill ride, delivering players to airlocks and kitten dance parties.

We have one of the most vibrant Steam Community Workshops, with over 300'000 models, maps, and contraptions to download. It has everything from new tools to improve your builds, to guns that fire rainbow-tinged nuclear blasts from space. Take as much or as little as you need: it’s all free.

Please note: Some multiplayer servers and game-modes might require you to own other games - such as Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2.
